PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

DESCRIPTION
During construction of the Waccabuc County Club WWTP, NY DEP evaluated the capability of MBRs to meet the agency’s tertiary treatment requirement. The findings were that MBR did meet the requirement led DEP to decide to eliminate the need for an additional tertiary treatment step. The decision resulted in a savings of $800,000 in capital costs. This was the first MBR plant in the New York City watershed to comply with the tertiary filtration requirement without additional microfiltration. It set a precedent for other plant designs to follow. DEP also is now looking at retrofitting facilities with MBRs to replace failing or aging secondary treatment systems in order to increase capacity, achieve higher effluent quality, and reduce operating costs.
