The upgrade allows the plant to meet new Advanced Wastewater Treatment effluent
limits imposed by the FDEP

PROJECT OVERVIEW

System Type(s): Ovivo® MBR
Previous Facility Type: Primary Treatment
Owner: North Key Largo Utility Corporation
Engineer: Wade Trim
Contractor: Wharton Smith, Inc.
Operations: North Key Largo Utility Corporation
Delivery Method: Pre-Selection
Time To Retrofit: 18 months
Total Installed Project Cost: $8,500,000

DESCRIPTION

In the Florida Keys, the City of Marathon’s Little Venice Wastewater Treatment Facility was originally an SBR system with a treatment capacity of 0.161 MGD. In 2005, the City adopted a plan that identified this plant for expansion. Only an MBR system was considered due to the tiny footprint available for the facility and the strict effluent requirements. Ovivo membrane system was chosen due to its at plate technology, simple cleaning skid and procedures, and comprehensive SCADA system. The new system was constructed on the existing site with no interruption in service, and no effluent violations during the entire construction process. The finished facility is capable of treating 0.450 MGD AADF and providing 100%
reuse of the treated water as need for its customers. In Sept 2016, the MBR was upgraded by replacement of the flat plate membranes with high end flat sheet membranes. The entire upgrade was done in 1 month- one basin at a time without interrupting the treatment.
